The Santa Cruz Island Fox, Lahui (Queen of the Island). The Island Fox is only found on Santa Cruz Island in the Santa Barbara Channel. This fox is no larger then a house cat. Anthropologists and natural historians have long speculated as to how this fox arrived on the island as no archaeological specimens have been found before the islands were near or connected to the mainland. For over a century the Chumash people have said that they were taken there, as friends and pets. Now, the scientists agree.
The island fox is the largest terrestrial land mammal on Santa Cruz Island. It hunts insects and raids the eggs of birds. It is a very curious animal and is a fine bandit of dirty socks! I’ve had mine stolen!
